SCREENING OF THE HYBRID MAIZE VARIETIES ON THE BASIS OF REPRODUCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS

The experiment was conducted to screen some maize varieties available in Bangladesh on the basis of their reproductive characteristics. Mean data were used to statistical analyze like analysis of variance, mean, range were calculated by using MSTATC software program. Significant variations among 50 maize genotypes in terms of all the yield contributing characters were found in this study. The lowest (24) days to 50% tasselling was found from the genotype 25KSS and VA-786, while the minimum (54) days to 50% silking was observed in the genotype PAC-984. The longest (21cm) cob was observed in the genotype VA-786, and the highest (17.07cm) cob diameter was recorded in the genotype GP-838.The highest (16.61) row per cob was recorded in the genotype NZ-001, and the highest (40.40) number of grains per row was recorded in the genotype PAC-399. The highest100grain weight (383.33g), was recorded in the genotype 25KSS, while the lowest (153.3g) was observed in the genotype of Uttaran-2. Statistically, significant variation was recorded for days to maturity in different maize genotypes. The highest (116) days to maturity were found in the genotype Elite, while the lowest days to maturity (107.3) were found in the genotype BHM-3. Grain yield (t ha-1) varied significantly in maize genotypes under the study. The average grain yield was recorded at around 6.14(t ha-1), and it ranged from 2.30 to 8.17. The highest grain yield (8.17 t ha-1) was recorded in genotype BHM-9, which was followed by PAC-984 (7.90t ha-1) and Pacific-98 (7.90t ha-1). Therefore, this experiment suggests that these three hybrids– namely,   BHM-9, PAC-984, and Pacific-98 have a high potential to produce more yield and are suitable for commercial cultivation in Bangladesh.

SOURCES OF RESISTANCE IN MUNGBEAN GERMPLASMS TO MUNGBEAN YELLOW MOSAIC VIRUS (MYMV) AND IT’S MANAGEMENT

An experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Sub-Station (PRSS), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydevpur, Gazipur and Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jessore, Bangladesh during kharif-1, 2014 under rain fed condition to find out the tolerant genotypes against Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Virus (MYMV) where viz. Gk – 22, SMZ – 134, VC – 3669, VC – 3960 A – 88, VC – 3960 A – 89, VC 6144, VC – 6144 (47 – 28 – 2), VC – 6148 (50 – 12), VC – 6153 – B – 20, VC – 6153 – 20P, VC – 6173, VC – 6173 B – 33, VC – 6372 – (45 – 8), VC – 6773 – B – 6, VC – 6897 and BARI Mung – 4 Mungbean genotypes were screened. It was found that the genotype VC – 6153 – B – 20 may be a wonderful source of MYMV tolerance. In the same time another experiment was carried out at Golapgonj, Sylhet and PRSS, Joydevpur for development of management package against the vector of this virus. For these reason five different treatments namely Furadan 3G, Furadan + Admire, Furadan + Neem leaf extract (NLE), Furadan + Sobicron and control were used, where Furadan treated as a basal dose. It was observed that Furadan + Admire treated plots have the lowest incidence (score – 2) of MYMV at both locations and produced the highest yields as compared to the other treatments. It is recommended that Admire can be used as a package for controlling MYMV.

SCREENING OF BRINJAL GENOTYPES AGAINST BRINJAL SHOOT AND FRUIT BORER (BSFB) UNDER NATURAL CONDITION

An experiment was undertaken to screen ten promising brinjal genotypes namely BARI Begun-1, BARI Begun-6, BARI Begun-8, BARI Begun-9, BARI Begun-10, BARI F1 Begun-4, Metal Hybrid F1 Begun, Getco Hybrid F1 Begun, local genotypes Singnath and Green ball against Brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) and to observe their relative level of tolerance and yield performance under natural field conditions in winter (September 2014 to March 2015). The highest fruit yield of 33.32 t ha-1 was harvested from BARI Begun-1 and the lowest 15.63 t ha-1 was obtained from Green ball. The highest and the lowest shoot infestation 17.30% and 7.74% were recorded in BARI Begun-8 and BARI Begun-6, respectively. The lowest fruit infestation by number and weight (20.00% and 18.07%) was found in BARI Begun-1 and the highest fruit infestation by number and weight (42.94% and 42.90%) was observed in BARI Begun-8. Varietal tolerance of brinjal against BSFB indicated significant variations among tested genotypes. The BARI Begun-1 showed the moderate level of tolerance and BARI Begun-8 found to be highly susceptible to BSFB.
